Smart tag technology is based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language), which is used to define and categorize content. These bits of data are then tagged to identify them according to their content type. For example, a group of words such as “Deb Shinder” is recognized as a person’s name, while the number combination “102 Main Street” is recognized as a street address. Smart tags are a way of annotating the content (text, pictures, etc.) in documents based on the type of information that is represented by that word, number, phrase, or picture.
